This course is intended to provide doctoral candidates with several essential skills and knowledge required to enhance their self-awareness, productivity, and resilience while developing strong teamwork and leadership qualities. Recognizing that doctoral candidates are often required to navigate complex academic environments and undertake independent research, this course aims, first, to provide them with the tools and strategies necessary to succeed in their academic endeavors; and, second, to strengthen their transversal skills to improve their employability and future integration into the labor market.

The course aims to enhance participants' abilities to communicate their research effectively, negotiate successfully in academic and professional settings, and understand the role of such skills in advancing their research and careers.

Data Stewardship – Module 1: MOOC

The DocEnhance Data Stewardship course gives an introduction to research data management. Managing (research) data in accordance with best practice is an easily transferable and much sought-after skill both within and outside of academia. The Data Stewardship course consists of three modules. Module 1 is a MOOC that goes through theory and best practice of data management. The module consists of video lectures and texts, organized by topical sessions from the various stages of the Research Data Management Lifecycle. Passing the Module 1 multiple choice exam is a prerequisite before moving on to Modules 2 and 3.

Data Stewardship – Module 2: Seminar assignments

In Module 2 of the Data Stewardship course, the participants team up for sessions with assignments to be done as group-work. Course material is available for six half-day sessions on topics from the Research Data Management Lifecycle, and where participants may use what was learned in Module 1. Module 2 also includes pre-assignments to be carried out as preparation, as well as an exam assignment.

Data Stewardship – Module 3: Knowledge into practice

Preparing PhD candidates for a career outside academia was a core objective of the DocEnhance project. In Module 3 of the Data Stewardship course, the candidates’ acquired data management knowledge from Modules 1 and 2 will be put to practice in cooperation with a business or public service office. The module contains advice on how to involve the non-academic sector, possible assignments that candidates can work on, and an exam assignment.

Up-to-date, systematic, and high-quality PhD supervision is the crucial tool that supports impactful doctoral education and prepares doctoral candidates to contribute to research and society. This PhD supervision resource consists of videos, essential reading materials, peer-group working materials and exercises. The resource can be used as part of organized, taught doctoral supervision courses both face-to-face, or online, and tailored to the needs of different supervisory target groups (beginning, young supervisors, more mature, or mixed groups, and industry supervisors).
